Rehearsal / Day One of Filming the Sandwich

Today marked the first day of shooting for my class for our three film productions that we will be making in the next two weeks. Today's shoot was for a script called The Sandwich, written by classmate Kristen Hall. We had a crew call at 7:30 am, began filming at 10:30 am and wrapped at 3:30 pm. We will finish up The Sandwich on Wednesday, setting up again at 7:30 am and wrapping up at 2 pm for a company move to start filming my script, Young, Awkward and Stupid.

Our crew positions for The Sandwich are as follows:

Director- Alex Gangi
Producer / 1st AD- Kristen Hall
Director of Photography- Rachael Abrams
Camera Operator- Abosedé Copeland
Sound Mixer- Gerald Butler
Key Grip- Kurt Shrader
Grip- Justin Andrews
Boom Operator- Katy Lowe
1st AC- Adam Tuckey
Gaffer- Wesley Caldwell
Best Boy- Kim Travis
Art Director- Christoph Tallerico
Script Supervisor- Jamey Smith

The cast for this film is the following:

Young Woman- Violet Butler
Young Man- Adam Bailey

We had a pre-production rehearsal / walk through of the set on Sunday morning at 10 am. I took a few pictures with my T2i to test Rachael's lighting schemes. You can see these pictures below.

Rachael using her light meter on Violet to gauge the f stop.

Kim acting as a stand in for Adam to determine our lighting.

Me acting as a stand in for Violet to test our living room lighting set up.

Rachael also acting as a stand in.

As shooting got under way this morning, Kristen took a few behind the scenes photos of us setting up. You can see them below.

Since we used my camera to shoot, I snagged a few stills from the actual film footage for your enjoyment. I made sure not to include any stills that were spoilerish in nature. Mostly, I just wanted to give people a taste of what the film will look like with the lighting we achieved.

You can see all these stills below.

Overall, it was a pretty good first day. We got started late but things went fast once we started. We actually finished up an hour before schedule. Don't get me wrong-- it was still a long day full of stress, hiccups and problem solving. But I loved it. It's great to finally be doing this.

Also, lunch break was amazing. Kristen's mom catered. She did home-made baked zitti and pumpkin cake. Good Lord. So good. I could barely move by the time the break was over. I now know why the professors were putting so much emphasis on lunch / catering.

That will do it for now. Stay tuned for more. I am going to attempt a blog post with behind the scenes photos / film stills for everyday of filming we do.

  2. Hey Wesley, those shots with the T2i look great, I have to say I am most impressed with this entire film school business. Keep up the good work, mom and dad.
